History

The Department of Social work, University of Ilorin was formally established as one of the Department in the Faculty of Social Sciences  in October, 2013 with the admission of first set of 156 students for a four year B.Sc programme in 2013/2014 academic session. This was during the tenure of Prof. A.G. Ambali as the Vice Chancellor and Prof A. Jimoh as the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences. The major philosophy of the programme is to raise competent graduates who will contribute immensely in addressing the emerging societal problems. The programme also have the following objectives:

i. Instill in students a sound knowledge of Social Work, appreciation of its applications in different socio-cultural contexts;

ii. Cultivate in students the ability to apply their social work knowledge and skills to the understanding and solution of growing societal problems in Nigeria and elsewhere;

iii. Instill in students an appreciation of the importance of professionalism in social work intervention in socio-cultural, legal, economic, political, industrial and environmental contexts; and

iv. Develop in students, a range of useful competencies for public, private or self- employment in the fields of social development.

At the inception of the programme, Prof. J.O Fayeye, from the Department of Sociology, became the foundation Head of Department because of his background knowledge and qualifications in Social Work. Consequently. the Department has witnessed continuous increase in students enrolment year by year as the largest in the faculty of Social Sciences at the undergraduate level as the plan to commence its postgraduate programme is still on pipeline.
